How
to Learn to Play Guitar
notes by Tim Rendle
| |
- Buy
youself a guitar. You will get more reward
from learning on a better guitar but there
are plenty of good second-hand guitars out
there if you have a good ear. If you know
someone that plays show them the guitar before
you buy it.
-
An acoustic guitar is harder to play than
an electric, but if you learn on an acoustic
you will play better chords and be able to
sound great on an electric guitar. An electric
guitar can make you sound like a Rock God
even if you get chords the wrong, but if you
learn on an electric you'll find an acoustic
guitar much hard to play and you'll need an
amp etc.
-
Cut your finernails on your left hand really
short. Nails interfere with the sound and
once your finger-tips toughen up you'll sound
great. To get your fingertips hard you will
have to practice and practice. They will hurt,
they might even bleed but theres not much
gain without a little pain.
- Learn
the basic chords below individually as a starting
lesson ( bookmark the page )
- Try
to keep your fingers close to (but not touching)
to the metal frets.
Learn the chords individually then practice
chord progressions. Basically just try and
learn changing between different chords. The
best way is to learn by playing songs

-
Go to a music shop and buy a really basic
song book (make sure you like a few of the
songs). When you start to play, it's far easir
to play the basic chords so find a book that
mainly has A, C, D, Dm, E, Em, F and G chords
. You will learn variations of these as you
go along.
-
The hard part after learning the basic chords
is learning how to change from one chord to
the next. The only way to learn this is to
practice.

Toughening
up your fingers
- (assuming
you are right handed) - your left hand
fingertips need to be as hard as possible.
With hard fingertips you can get a better
clearer note from the strings. The most
effective way to harden your finger tips
is to practice playing. Boring I know.
Other methods I have heard of include
hardening some epoxy resin or superglue
on the tips of your fingers
( We don't condone this method but it
does work apparantly).
